Chakotay waited nervously beneath the oak tree. *What are you going to do if she doesn't show up?* he asked himself. *What are you going to do if she does?*
He took a deep breath, trying to calm his strumming heart. Why should he be so nervous? It wasn't as if this were the first time he had invited her to dinner.
*But things have been so different lately,* he reminded himself.
Things had changed recently. There wasn't any one thing he could point to, no moment or event which he could cite as the source. It was the accumulation of little things; the way she looked at him, the way she touched his shoulder when they parted, the way she smiled when he came in the room. She had not openly encouraged him, he wasn't even sure she was aware of her actions. Maybe he was reading too much into things, she was a touchy person; her way of expressing approval and camaraderie. Did she know that those little things were the reason he had asked her to a private dinner?
And now she was late. "Don't do this to me, Kathryn. I'm not sure I can take it again."
The door slid open and Kathryn Janeway entered the holodeck. Chakotay felt his tense muscles relax and his heart to race. The mixed signals were almost too much for his body; his knees buckled. Chakotay allowed his weak knees to betray him and with a smile he sank to the blanket at his feet.
"I was afraid you weren't coming."
Kathryn sat down next to him; not so close that they were touching, yet closer than she might have. "Too much to do. Some days I don't think I'll ever clear my desk."
"Imagine how bad it would be if Star Fleet were around to generate responses to those reports."
Kathryn laughed, the sound struck a chord deep in Chakotay's heart. "I knew there was a silver lining to being stuck in the Delta Quadrant."
Chakotay joined her laughter, happy to see her discarding the day's work and allowing herself to be simply Kathryn and not Captain. "Would you like some wine? Neelix had a reserve from our trip to Pilian."
"That sounds wonderful." she agreed holding out her glass.
The meal that followed was a quiet and intimate experience. Neither tried to fill the silence with chatter, content to simply sit together. When they were finished Chakotay rose and offered her his hand. "Want to take a walk?"
Kathryn took his hand and he felt his pulse race again.
"That sound great."
Together they strolled through the woods. Kathryn had not asked him to remove his hand from hers; he took it as a good sign. They walked together, not saying much, enjoying the rare opportunity of being completely alone. As they rounded a bend the trees cast a deeper shadow obscuring the ground. Kathryn's foot caught a root and she tripped. Chakotay's arms were around her and pulling her up before she could react.
Kathryn planted her feet firmly on the ground and looked up. Chakotay's dark eyes were now only inches from her blue. *Back up, Kathryn!* she ordered herself. Her body refused to obey. She could feel his arms around her, his breath upon her head. She could hear her own heart hammering in her ears, and smell his scent; so close it made her giddy. It was too much to fight. When he leaned down to kiss her she slipped up on her tip toes and met him half-way.
The passion they both expressed in that first kiss surprised Kathryn, her desire for more scared her. Eyes wide in panic she stepped back away from the intoxicating man holding her.
"Chakotay, no."
She wasn't surprised by the pain in his eyes, but it made her want to cry.
"Kathryn, don't do this." he said quietly, but without concealing the hurt. "Don't put me through this again. Don't put us through it again."
"I have to. My duty to this ship must remain paramount. I can not ignore protocol simply to satisfy my own desires."
The pain in his eyes was beginning to be replaced by anger. "Don't throw rules and regulations at me, Kathryn. We are 60 years from the power enforcing those regulations. You and I might never live to see home. Do you really want to spend the rest of your life alone?"
Kathryn had crossed her arms protectively across her torso, to Chakotay it looked like she was trying to hug herself. "I...Chakotay, please understand."
Chakotay could still taste her mouth on his, he knew she was lying. He reached out and caressed her cheek. He stared in disbelief when she slapped his hand away.
"Commander, please! This ship must adhere to Star Fleet protocol, and that most definitely applies to the captain."
Chakotay was truly angry now; angry at her denial, angry at his own desire, angry with their whole situation. "If protocol is what you want Captain Janeway, then protocol will be maintained." he didn't try to hide his bitterness, nor keep his voice below a shout. "Permission to leave, Captain?"
When she failed to respond he turned on his heel and stomped away. "Computer, exit. Delete program." he ordered. The forest vanished as he stepped out onto deck 6. Kathryn was left alone amid the dull gray of a barren holodeck.
***
Chakotay stomped through the corridors scattering crewmen before him like quail. It was clear that the First Officer was in no mood to be approached. Everything would have been fine if Tom had simply been watching were he was headed, but true to his luck the pilot was not paying attention as he rounded the corner. He slammed into Chakotay and collapsed on the floor.
"Watch it Paris."
"Sorry, Commander I wasn't paying attention."
"Maybe if I put you on report you'll remember to pay attention."
Tom gave him a puzzled look as he climbed to his feet. "I said I was sorry Sir. It won't happen again."
Chakotay glared at the helmsman searching for a reason to continue his dressing-down, but couldn't find any. Clenching his fist with unreleased anger he shouldered his way past Paris and rounded the corner.
Paris watched him rush down the hall. "She really must have gotten to him this time." he mumbled to himself. "Paris to Torres." he said tapping his communicator.
"What is it, Tom? I'm a little busy."
"Chakotay just nearly bit my head off for no real reason. I think maybe he could use someone to talk to."
"Guess dinner didn't go like he planned." she commented quietly.
"That would be my guess. Why don't you talk to him when you're done down there? We can play pool tomorrow."
"Yeah, I will. See you later."
"Let me know how it goes. Paris out."
***
"This had better be important." shouted Chakotay as his door opened.
B'Elanna stepped in looking as if she were ready to wrestle a targ. "I'd say it is. When the king of peace and gentility is stomping through corridors scattering crew and bodyslamming pilots there must be something terribly wrong."
Chakotay blushed. "I'll apologize to Tom tomorrow. Was there anything else."
"I thought you might want to talk about it."
"There is nothing to talk about, B'Elanna."
"You are lying, Chakotay. You never used to lie to me."
Chakotay sat down and waved the engineer into the opposite chair. "It would be inappropriate for me to discuss this with you. Let's just say that I am having trouble relating to a certain crew member, and leave it at that. I'm sure I'll have my anger under control by tomorrow."
"Maybe you shouldn't."
"What?"
"Anger is not something you should keep bottled up, Chakotay."
Despite his mood, Chakotay laughed. "B'Elanna, how would you know, your temper is uncontrollable."
"That's not true. I go out of my way to control my anger, if I didn't I'd have killed half the crew before we were out here a week. I know all about controlling your anger, and believe me sometimes it is the wrong way to go."
Chakotay sighed, hanging his head and leaning on his knees. "I don't think it would be a good idea."
"If you keep letting her think it doesn't bother you, she'll never understand."
Chakotay's head jerked up at her comment and he stared in shock. "How do you know who it is?"
"Do you really think anyone doesn't know?" she asked, shaking her head. "Chakotay, it's obvious to anyone who knows you. On a ship this small, it's probably obvious even to those who don't."
Chakotay stood and began to pace in front of his friend. "There is nothing I can do. She is unwilling to relax protocol, it's her ship--her rules."
B'Elanna snorted, "Protocol on this ship is none too strict."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean I've seen worse. When I was at the Academy there were plenty of times when we were required to observe protocol much stricter than that which Janeway requires."
Chakotay had stopped pacing and stood lost in thought. "Chakotay?...Chakotay, are you still listening?"
"What? Yeah."
B'Elanna shook her head, then smiled. "Chakotay?"
"I'm sorry B'Elanna. I'm not good company right now." He started pacing again.
***
"Are you joking?" Asked Harry.
"No" answered B'Elanna from her place inside Tom's arms. "He's hurting. So's she." She wasn't convinced they had completely grasped her idea.
"We'll find out, here he comes." said Tom gesturing to the door with his chin so as not to loose his hold on B'Elanna.
Chakotay walked quickly to their table and slid into his seat. He picked up the PADD in front of him and looked each of the younger officers in the eye. "What."
Tom looked sheepish and he removed his arms from B'Elanna. "B'Elanna, actually all of us, have observed certain things about your behavior concerning a particular crewmember."
"You mean the Captain?" asked Chakotay.
"Of course we've noticed. My betting pool would be half as rich as it is if I didn't have you to keep the crew entertained."
Chakotay glared at him. "I'm so glad my situation is common fodder for entertainment." he grumbled.
Tom winced. "Don't take it personally, Chakotay. I have bets on Harry's love life too."
"Hey!" squeaked Kim.
B'Elanna slid away from Tom. "Alright, we all know helmboy has no scruples, let's move on."
Tom looked hurt by her accusation, but he wisely kept his mouth shut and gave his attention to B'Elanna.
"We're here because I think this situation is never going to change unless we make it clear to her that she should reexamine her devotion to protocol. To do that I'm going to need your help." B'Elanna looked at each of the group.
"What are you planning?" asked Chakotay suspiciously.
"Her excuse for pushing you away is always protocol. She can not allow herself to disregard certain unwritten rules, but we all know that there are many forms of protocol."
"I still don't get it." Harry said, shaking his head.
"I think I do." said Tom with excitement. "Be wants Chakotay to enforce all protocol. Make her wish she'd never heard of it."
Chakotay smiled slightly as B'Elanna continued. "Exactly. If we can get her to reexamine protocol, maybe she will relax a little. I understand, as we all do, that a certain level of order must be maintained. But, we are too far from home to pretend that Star Fleet is looking over our shoulder at every move. We just want her to realize that maybe she can do things a little differently."
"I'm in." promised Tom with enthusiasm.
"Me too." seconded Harry.
"Chakotay?" queried B'Elanna. She smiled when the commander nodded his head.
Chakotay began to punch up data on the PADD. "Let's review some regulations, shall we."
***
Captain Janeway was worried as she made her way to breakfast. Things had gotten way out of hand with Chakotay last night. She never should have let them reach that point; what had she been thinking! She was not really watching what was happening around her as she entered the Mess Hall and Harry's shout nearly startled her into cardiac arrest.
"Captain on the deck!"
As one every crewman in the room snapped to attention. Janeway stared around her in shock--no one moved. Finally realizing that they were waiting for her to acknowledge them she found her voice. "At ease." she ordered. Without a word of explanation they returned to their seats and resumed their conversations.
Now totally confused Kathryn moved on and chose several fruits to use as breakfast. Seeing her normal table free, she made her way across the room. Sitting she tried to think of a reason for the display that had greeted her on her entrance, but an explanation escaped her.
Her throat tightened instinctively as she looked up to see Chakotay enter the room. *He looks tired.* she observed silently. Not bothering to find something to eat he made his way to the table shared by Torres and Kim and took a seat. Try as she might she could not make out their conversation.
Did you get the order out to everyone?" Chakotay asked quietly.
Harry nodded. "It was on every personal terminal and every work station by 0500. With the exception of hers, of course."
"Does the whole crew know why?"
"No." said B'Elanna shaking her head. "As far as they know it's an exercise in discipline. The same excuse they used to use at the Academy."
"I think it might work, Commander. She really looked shocked when she came in here and everyone snapped to attention." Harry tried not to laugh.
"Just wait until everyone calls her 'sir'" whispered B'Elanna. "That's when the sparks are really going to fly."
Harry winced. "I'd forgotten about that. She's going to have our heads."
"Just tell her you're following my orders, Harry. Let me worry about the consequences."
"And that's when I told Tom to move his hand or loose it." said B'Elanna quickly.
Chakotay and Harry looked up to find Janeway standing next to the table. As one the officers stood at attention.
"Commander, could I talk to you?" Janeway asked eyeing them with curiosity.
"Of course, Captain. I was on my way to the Bridge right now."
As they made their way toward the turbolift Chakotay tried to ignore the tension he could feel radiating from her body.
"Commander, I want to apologize for my actions yesterday." she began.
"No need, Captain. I understand fully." Chakotay answered as he watched crewman Foster approach them.
Foster did not disappoint, as he passed his commanders he snapped to attention, "Good morning, Sir." he greeted crisply.
Janeway stopped and stared at him. "At ease, crewman." When he did not respond further Kathryn waved him on. Turning around she watched him enter the Mess Hall. "Chakotay, is there some practical joke being played on me?"
"No. No joke that I'm aware of, Captain."
Janeway resumed her pace with a shrug. "Maybe I'll figure it out later." As they entered the lift she squared her shoulders and turned to face Chakotay. "Chakotay, I wish you would accept my apology. My behavior was inexcusable."
Chakotay looked at her, and in that moment wanted more than anything to forgive her and take her in his arms. But he knew that would only lead to more heartbreak, and so he remained true to their plan. "There is nothing to forgive, Captain. You have made it clear from the beginning the importance you place on protocol. It is I who should apologize, for forgetting."
The lift stopped and they stepped out onto the Bridge.
"Captain on the Bridge!" shouted Paris.
Everyone, including Tuvok snapped to attention. Janeway surveyed the room with cold eyes. Her gaze settled on Chakotay, but she shook her head. "Mr. Tuvok. In my Ready Room." she ordered.
As the door slid shut behind the Captain and Vulcan, Tom stepped up beside Chakotay. "What do you think he will tell her?"
"Exactly what he believes." answered Chakotay. "That we are conducting an exercise in discipline."
After a moment Tuvok returned to the Bridge and took his place as if nothing had transpired. With a Vulcan you could never be sure, but Chakotay took it as a good sign. He sat at his station and began to review the days activity.
~~~~
Kathryn sat at her desk reading B'Elanna's latest report on dilithium performance when her door chime sounded. "Come." she called without looking up. When there was no break in the quiet she looked up to find Chakotay standing at attention in front of her desk.
"Commander what can I do for you?"
Chakotay remained at attention. "Begging the Captain's pardon, but these reviews are complete. Should I forward them to the appropriate department heads?"
Janeway was too distracted by Chakotay's stance to focus on what he was saying. "At ease, Commander. You're making my shoulders ache."
Chakotay relaxed his body and came to parade rest. Janeway frowned, he was taking this exercise far too seriously. "Chakotay, please sit down." When her First Officer was seated, Kathryn wasn't sure he looked anymore relaxed. She gave up. "Let me see them, please."
Chakotay handed her the PADDs and waited quietly for her to scan through them. When she finished and returned them to her he once again stood at attention.
Janeway sighed, this was becoming tiresome. "Send them along, Commander they look fine to me. Dismissed." Chakotay turned a crisp about face and marched himself out onto the Bridge.
~~~~
"Kim to Captain Janeway."
Kathryn put down B'Elanna's report and looked up at the empty room. "Yes, what is it Mr. Kim."
"Captain, we are receiving a message from a planet called Orto."
"On my way." As Janeway stepped out onto the Bridge she cringed.
"Captain on the Bridge!" shouted Kim.
Kathryn sighed. "As you were people." She gave Chakotay a long look before turning her attention to Harry. "Put the message through, Ensign."
"Aye, aye, Sir." answered Kim praying he didn't get is head ripped off. Janeway stopped dead in her tracks as his affirmation reached her. Slowly she turned to face him and Harry swallowed audibly. "The message is recorded, Captain." He hit the button to display the message before his composure could break, and sighed in relief when Janeway turned to face the screen.
"Greetings starship Voyager." began the man on the screen. He was humanoid but there were major differences in his anatomy. Janeway studied the horns and fangs which gave his face a monstrous appearance by human standards, and filed it separately from the kind words of his message. "We are the Ortoans. Word of your journey through our space reached us some weeks ago and we were quite impressed. You and your people are an inspiration to us. We would be honored if you could visit our world. We want nothing in return, it is simply our wish to provide you with a few days of respite on your incredible journey. Please consider our offer, we anxiously await your reply."
Janeway took three steps to place herself next to Chakotay. "That was a pleasant invitation, don't you think Commander?"
The tall dark head nodded, and Janeway steeled herself against the flips her stomach would perform when he smiled--it didn't work. Chakotay grinned and her body mutinied.
"Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for R and R. It's been several months since most of the crew has left the ship. Some are getting a little jumpy." His smile widened, and Janeway knew his next comment was only for her. "I'd be interested to learn if they had any rivers worth floating. I've been in the mood for a sail lately."
Janeway nodded, trying desperately to stop the images that were leaping to mind--memories of Chakotay on New Earth building a boat. It was best she forget all about that. She forced herself to concentrate on the Ortoan's offer. The image of the messenger's fanged face helped. "Mr. Paris. Set course for Orto, we've just been invited to a vacation."
"Aye, aye, sir." responded Paris as crisply as only a military brat can. "Setting course for Orto; ETA 2.5 hours, present speed."
The smile that was threatening to escape from the Captain died quickly as Tom's formality stung her ears. Janeway frowned. She didn't turn her head. "Commander, prepare a schedule for shore-leave rotation. I'll be in my ready room." She walked away, steeling herself for his response. She didn't wince at his *Yes, sir* until she was standing alone in her ready room.
"What the hell is going on." She knew what kind of drill this was--she'd hated them as a cadet, and was fast coming to the conclusion that she hated them even worse as a Captain.
***
When the summons arrived from the bridge just over two hours later, Kathryn had a headache raging in full force. Her in-box was full to overflowing with items for her approval. B'Elanna had forwarded work schedules up through the chain of command to be signed off; supply sent copies of supplies on hand for her review, even Neelix had brought the menu for the day for her approval. He'd delivered it personally, snapping to attention like a first year cadet. She'd wondered who'd coached him. It had all become very tiresome. And so, if her "Janeway here" sounded more like a growl there was just cause.
There was a moments hesitation before Ensign Kim continued. "Captain, we have reached the Ortoan system. The planetary leader is hailing us."
"On my way, Mr. Kim," she responded and then sighed. She was better than this. This was just an exercise and she would get through it. Straightening her shoulders she moved toward the bridge. Chakotay's announcement of 'Captain on the Bridge' did unpleasant things with her headache but she did not let it show. "As Ease," she responded moving smoothly toward her seat.
The Ortoan leader welcomed them cordially, inviting a delegation to meet to discuss their visit. Janeway found the easy relaxed manner of the Ortoans to be quite pleasant. She looked forward to meeting with them. When the screen went blank she turned to choose her away team.
~~~~
Janeway and her away team materialized on a wide park lawn. Smiling at the beauty around her, the Captain turned her head to take in as much of their surroundings as possible before their greeting party reached them. The sky above was a clear, deep blue; darker than an earth sky, but still gorgeous. There was a faint breeze, and small animals could be heard making sounds in the various small greenery.
Kathryn squared her shoulders as the Ortoan representative approached. It was the same alien she had spoken to earlier. He was accompanied by two more officials.
"Welcome, Captain Janeway" he greeted her.
"Thank you President Pralt" Janeway returned. "Your planet is beautiful, some time here will be most appreciated by my crew."
The Ortoans were smiling and eyeing the rest of the away team with curiosity. Janeway smiled, "How rude of me. May I present my First Officer, Commander Chakotay."
Chakotay remained at attention, without a word he politely shook the President's hand.
Janeway frowned. "My Chief Engineer, B'Elanna Torres and my Chief of Operations, Harry Kim." Kathryns frown deepened as both officers followed Chakotay's lead. Stepping in front of her crewmen, Janeway took the Presidents arm. "Are there any details we need to discuss, Mr. President?"
The Ortoan's fangs gleamed in the sunlight as he smiled at Janeway. "There is nothing to discuss, Captain. Your crew is welcome to vacation here for as long as you feel is necessary. We are honored by your presence, and only wish to lighten the enormous burden you have taken for yourselves."
"Thank you , Mr. President."
The smile vanished from Pralt's face. "Please Captain, such formality is unseemly. Will you not call me Glet?"
Janeway smiled and patted his arm. "Only if you will call me Kathryn."
Glet beamed with pleasure. "Excellent. Now Kathryn, will you not agree to be my guest for your stay. There are many relaxing pleasure which I wish to share with you." Glet turned to look over his shoulder. "I would also like your company, Commander. I am sure there is much my planet can offer you."
Chakotay smiled graciously. "If my Captain allows it, I would be most honored, Glet."
The Ortoan seemed slightly confused by this remark, and looked to Kathryn for an explanation.
"I have no objection, Commander." answered Janeway with as little animosity as she could manage.
As Chakotay followed Glet and Kathryn along the path he could barely conceal the conflict within. *Great!* he told himself. *You just managed to get invited to spend a relaxing week, in a beautiful location alone with Kathryn, and you are in the middle of "teaching her a lesson". That's just your luck, Chakotay.*
Trying not to show his turmoil, he followed his Captain.
B'Elanna shook her head as she watched the two commanding officers and the President walk away. "He's going to try to keep the game going...Even here." She laughed.
Harry smiled, "Is there even a stipulation about where he should be walking?"
"Who knows. I haven't had time to review every bit of Star Fleet regulation. But look at the Captain..."
Harry joined in the quiet laughter. "She looks angry even back here." They both turned to greet a young Ortoan male who was approaching.
"I'm Kevrew. I've been assigned to show you around the markets. Anything in particular you are looking for?"
"Actually," B'Elanna said with a smile. "I have quite a list."
Glet was puzzled. This new alien race seemed very formal...Yet as he watched his two guests, he noticed that the male was trying very hard to walk a few steps behind the female. Glet almost laughed at the formality--the male seemed very uncomfortable--and the female was trying to control her anger. Glet shook his head.
Kathryn slowed down, hoping Chakotay would get the hint. She clenched her fist, when he didn't move to stand by her side. *This is ridiculous,* she thought. *This discipline drill does NOT need to be continued while we are down here.* With more than a touch of anger, she started walking faster. This was more than a routine discipline drill, she realized. But what?
Glet lead the Captain and commander to a ground transportation vehicle. A burly driver opened a rear door to allow Janeway and Chakotay entry, while Glet slid into a front seat.
Janeway thanked the burly driver as she made ready to slide into the vehicle. "Begging the Captain's pardon," Chakotay murmured, freezing her to the spot. *What could it possibly be now?*
"Yes, Commander?" she asked focusing a chill gaze on him.
Chakotay gulped. "Protocol demands that I get in the car first."
Cognizant of Glet's curious glance, Janeway asked a hurried, "Whatever for?"
Chakotay continued on, "So that when we arrive out our destination, you, as the senior officer may appear first from the vehicle."
"Ah," she said with a forced smile waving him forward. "I'd forgotten. Thank you for the reminder." *This is definitely more than a drill* she thought, settling stiffly into the vehicle. She thought briefly of asking Chakotay outright, but this wasn't the time or the place for such a discussion. Besides, she could handle this. Forcing herself to relax, she turned and took in the scenery.
Chakotay watched his captain from the corner of his eye. She sat stiffly beside him, pretending to relax. He wondered briefly if he should hold off on the protocol a bit because if there was anything Kathryn needed, it was to enjoy herself. But if he gave up now, what would he have accomplished? Would anything really change? He hardened his resolved and focused on the words of the Ortoan diplomat.
"Our first stop," Glet was saying as the vehicle drifted away from the curb and up to hovering altitude, "is one the most beautiful areas of our city. I've taken the liberty of having a suite prepared for you during your stay. If you'd like to attend to personal matters, or perhaps confer in private.. "
The Ortoan would have to have been blind to miss the look that passed between Janeway and Chakotay at the mention of a private conference. He nodded his head almost imperceptibly, yes, something was definitely wrong between these two. Perhaps they did not work well together? It seemed an odd relationship to him, but then again these were aliens and there was no accounting for social and species differences.
Janeway smiled appreciatively at the President. "That's very kind of you, Glet but I don't know how much time we will be spending away from the ship. Your planet is a wonderful distraction, but there is still work to be done aboard."
Glet frowned slightly. He did not understand this obviously rigid and serious species. "Surely you will take some time for relaxation?"
"Some time off would be welcome." Janeway agreed graciously.
Glet smiled. "Wonderful, then the accommodations will not be wasted." He dropped the subject before the two could find further reason to reject the offer. If he had ever seen any two beings more in need of a vacation, he could not imagine where.
As the three exited the car Chakotay's commbadge signaled. Making an apology he stepped away from the car. "Chakotay here." he responded.
"Sir," began Paris, "regulations require the Captain's notification of all changes in warp status. Our engines are now off line."
"Completely?"
"Yes, sir. B'Elanna ordered a diagnostic. Strictly routine."
Chakotay chuckled. "Thanks Tom, that's perfect." He hid his smile as he returned to the group. "Begging the Captain's pardon." he began. Janeway gave him a pained look.
"Yes, Commander?"
"Captain, it is my duty to report that Voyager's warp engines are now off line."
Janeway's expression grew confused. "Did B'Elanna order a diagnostic?"
"Aye"
Kathryn sighed heavily. "If the shut down is procedural, why are you telling me Commander?"
Chakotay feigned a surprised look. "Regulations, Captain."
The look the First Officer received could have ignited the warp core. Chakotay chose to ignore it. Turning to face Glet he smiled. "Glet, I would be most interested to see the accommodations you have prepared for the Captain."
Chakotay watched the Captain cover her impatience. He maintained a mask of calm as he carefully prepared his next words...He didn't get a chance to speak--Janeway interrupted. "A very good idea. I want to speak with you anyway."
"Yes, Captain." She quickly turned her attention back to the scenery.
Kathryn was debating whether to order him to stop this Discipline Drill. She was becoming sick-and-tired of protocol. A tiny smile played on her lips as she saw the plan.
The whole crew was in on this? Her smile slipped away at that thought. Well, if they wanted protocol, she knew the regulations too. And most of it would be directed at her First Officer.
***
"There are several adjoining rooms, each containing private facilities. A central area is also available if desired on the roof level, through these doors. Individual preferences can be adjusted via the central console, behind this panel, as well as communicating with the...."
Glet looked on in muted curiosity as the male and female from the Starship Voyager listened to the hotel manager. It was obvious that both of their minds were preoccupied with other issues. If the pair had been Ortoan, Glet would have sworn that the two were having a lover's quarrel. But of course, these were aliens, and one never knew.
As the manager completed his tour of the suite, Glet motioned to a guard. "We will meet you on the lower level in 45 standard increments. Yoharn will be just outside the door to escort you down when you're ready." With that, captain and commander were left alone.
Tension came to a head as the door slid shut. Janeway eyed Chakotay's relaxed stance with a raised brow.
Chakotay frowned, coming to attention. "Captain?" he questioned, wondering if perhaps this were a sign he might not be in control of the situation any longer.
Janeway didn't respond, but twisted her mouth mildly in thought then moved away, tapping her comm badge as she went. "Janeway to Voyager."
"Voyager here, Captain." Ensign Jordan answered the hail.
"Ensign, patch me through directly to the ships computer." There was a pause as the Ensign went about handling the unusual request.
"Aye," the Ensign signed off as the computer chirped an acknowledgment.
Janeway paced several more steps toward a beverage counter that sat on the far side of the room as she murmured her commands into the computer. Chakotay could only make out the computer's audible chirp of acknowledgment.
Several articles of clothing appeared on the surface of the counter. Kathryn picked up one and headed toward one of the doors leading into the private rooms. "At ease, Commander," she tossed over her shoulder. "You need to get changed." The door slid shut behind her.
He relaxed slightly as he walked across to pick up the dress uniform. The captain must have accessed the ships computer to get his size. He took a closer look at the uniform...Something wasn't quite right...
Twirling the fabric between his fingers, Chakotay tried to single-out the difference in the uniform; it escaped him. "Oh, well. Orders are orders." he said with a shrug. When he lifted the garment off the counter the thought that had been nagging at his mind sprang forward. Chakotay began to chuckle darkly and a small grin spread its way across his lips. "The Captain has decided to play." he commented to the empty room. "I hope my legs are up to this." His grin turned into a smile as he began to undress.
Five minutes later Chakotay examined himself in the mirror. The Captain's choice of dress uniform had been the "dress uniform". Chakotay eyed his knees which looked knobby and awkward peeking from under the hem of the uniform. When he heard the door behind him open he swallowed nervously and turned to face his captain.
"Very nice, Commander." commented Janeway as she made her way to the drink counter. She tried to hide the smile that tugged at her mouth. Trying to sound casual and denying the thrill she found at the sight of Chakotay's dark and muscular legs, she asked "Care for a refreshment before we meet Glet?"
"No thank you, Captain. I'm fine."
Janeway had been about to offer a truce, but the glibness in her First Officer's voice made her harden her resolve. Instead of acknowledging the tension and circumstances of their situation she nodded briskly and headed for the door. "Come along, Commander. It is bad policy to keep diplomats waiting."
Chakotay followed his Captain through the door as he contemplated how she would look in the uniform style he was currently sporting.
***
Glet took his wife's hand and smiled. "Stop being nervous my love."
Dabrel returned his smile nervously. "I've never done this before..."
Glet laughed kindly at his bride's confession. "Our guests are very kind, but very formal." He quickly squeezed her hand in comfort as the doors to the room opened and their guests were announced.
Glet stepped forward to greet them. "Welcome to my home Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay. I'd like you to meet my wife, Dabrel."
Chakotay looked around the room, hoping for a fire or other heat source. His legs were cold.
He left the Captain's side to mingle with the other Ortoan dignitaries. He looked at her. She seemed to find their hosts' company pleasant. A polite grunt interrupted his thoughts.
A feminine Ortoan voice spoke, "I'm Telarath, director of the Ler Atlo Mining Company. We might be doing business." She looked at him carefully. "I see your species also has peculiar fashion for formal wear too." She grinned. "Let's discuss business."
Chakotay couldn't help but smile at the woman. Something in his manner reminded him of Kathryn Janeway. Perhaps it was her forthrightness.
"I'm Chakotay," he introduced himself. "First Officer of the Federation Starship Voyager. And I do hope my appearance isn't too...shocking. It's an...older custom."
Telarath detected a slight color in his face and wondered what emotion it hinted at. She filed it away and smiled. "Not at all. I find it rather a pleasant sight, actually. Refreshing." Her words seemed to cause his expression to falter slightly. She laughed as she realized it was embarrassment.
"I'm a business woman, Chakotay. And am woefully untrained in the art of diplomacy among alien species. Please forgive me if I've offended you."
Chakotay gave her one of his biggest smiles to reassure her. "Of course not, Telarath. I appreciate forthrightness in any situation. But I must admit that any negotiation of materials must take place in Captain Janeway's presence."
Telarath took the news in stride. "Well, as your captain appears busy with Glet and his wife," she gestured toward the floor where several attendees were moving in time to lilting music. "Does you species dance?"
Chakotay followed the alien woman's gesture. He shot a quick look in Kathryn's direction and noted that she'd caught the woman's action and was frowning. He grinned broadly and took the Telarath's proffered arm. "I'd be honored to dance." *Waste not want not.* he thought to himself at the fortunate turn of events.
Kathryn spent the next twenty minutes trying to watch Chakotay's antics on the dance floor, without looking like she was watching Chakotay's antics on the dance floor. It was a losing battle.
"Your officer seems to be enjoying himself." noted Glet as Kathryn's attention wandered yet again. The alien wondered why this woman didn't simply walk over and ask Telarath to change partners, but then again, these were a strange people.
Kathryn's expression was nearly a grimace. "Yes, he looks as if he's enjoying himself."
The Captain and President continued to carry the conversation, but Janeway's eyes rarely left the dancing First Officer. Both were relieved when Janeway's commbadge interrupted.
"Paris to Janeway."
"Go ahead, Tom."
Paris tried to sound apologetic, "Sorry to bother you, Captain, but we are picking up some rather strange readings. Regulations require both you and Commander Chakotay to return to the ship."
Janeway's grin registered her satisfaction. "Very well, Lieutenant. I'll retrieve Commander Chakotay and we'll beam aboard immediately. Janeway out."
She turned to offer a sincere apology to Glet. "I am sorry, Glet. But as my people say, duty calls. I'm sure this is nothing that will require a great deal of attention, would you and your wife care to join us one evening for dinner? Your hospitality has been most gracious, please allow us to reciprocate."
Glet nodded with excitement. "I would be honored, Kathryn. I must admit that I am most curious to see this great ship of yours."
"Excellent. I will have my staff contact you. Now, I really must be going. Thank you for a wonderful time."
Janeway crossed the room to find Chakotay standing much too near Telarath, at least it looked far too close to her.
"Commander, I'm afraid we must be leaving now. Paris just informed me of a situation which requires our attention."
Chakotay eyed the female Ortoan apologetically. "I'm sorry, Telarath, looks like I will have to be going."
Telarath smiled in return, her fangs giving her furry face a more sinister gleam. "Don't let me distract you, Chakotay. It has been a most entertaining evening. Thank you."
Chakotay smiled warmly. "My thanks to you, Telarath. I hope to see you again."
"Commander." prompted Janeway.
Chakotay stepped into position behind Janeway. "My apologies Captain." He tapped his commbadge. "Chakotay to Voyager. The Captain is ready for transport. Energize."
Kathryn rolled her eyes in exasperation as she began to dematerialize.
Janeway looked around the transporter, then stared hard at Harry, who was at the controls. Harry felt like he would be dissolved into a liquid goo, but managed to say, "Welcome back sir." He held out a padd containing the data about the unusual readings. He smiled weakly at Chakotay's apologetic smile as the commander followed the Captain to the bridge. It wasn't until after the door closed that Harry allowed himself to laugh at what the commander was wearing--or rather wasn't. He quickly warned the bridge that they were on their way.
They didn't speak on the turbo-lift. Chakotay was aware that perhaps his protocol idea was out of his control. The tension between them was intense, he could feel her anger...
The door opened. They both ignored the *Captain on the bridge* announcement. Janeway quickly sat in her chair. "Report."
"We've detected a force field near the government palace." Tuvok looked straight at her. "It dissipated within seconds of you beaming back to Voyager."
Chakotay moved to Tuvok's station to study the data. "It seems to be originate from a building on the outskirts of the city."
"I want a complete analysis in an hour. I'll be in my ready room." She stood and without looking behind her, said, "And Commander, I believe you need to change."
After Janeway's parting comment, Chakotay turned the bridge over to Tuvok and made a quick retreat toward the turbolift. He steadfastly ignored Tom Paris's pitying glances. But he couldn't stop a grimace before the doors closed--he remembered that his only clean uniform was down on the planet. *Terrific,* he thought. It would take the remainder of his replicator rations for the week to get another one. This little exercise had most definitely gotten out of control.
"Bridge to Commander Chakotay." Tuvok's monotone sounded over his comm link.
"Go ahead, Mr. Tuvok," Chakotay responded, having already reached the senior officer's deck. He came to a stop to listen to Tuvok's message.
"A Ortoan female identifying herself as Telarath wishes to speak with you."
Chakotay's brows rose, but he continued walking on. "Did she say what about?"
"No. She did not. Would you like me to inquire?"
"No," Chakotay grinned imagining such a scenario. "Thank you Tuvok, but I'll take it in my quarters."
~~~~
Chakotay smiled warmly as Telarath's face appeared on his monitor. "Hello, Telarath. What can I do for you?"
"I take it the pressing business aboard your ship was none too pressing?"
Chakotay shrugged. "Not really, we mainly had to return because the rules say we are supposed to."
Telarath studied his face closely as he spoke, and Chakotay got the feeling that she could read him like a book. She seemed to reach some sort of decision as she nodded. "Chakotay, my President tells me that your species is very formal. But, I spend a great deal of time negotiating, and I think he is wrong. Something tells me that the behavior we have observed is not your normal conduct. In fact, I would bet twenty kilos of dilithium that there is something going on; something between you and that pretty Captain of yours."
Chakotay knew his expression was probably broadcasting his emotions, but he couldn't help it. How did she do that? He had barely met this woman and she was seeing right through him. "I wish I had your insight, Telarath. If I did it might have prevented me from getting into this situation."
"She loves you."
Her statement was so matter of fact and unexpected that Chakotay nearly fainted. "Wh...what?"
"She loves you. Didn't you know? It was very clear this evening, she never took her eyes off you. I earn my money by being able to discover what makes other people tick, Chakotay. Believe me, she is in love with you."
Chakotay smiled; yes he definitely liked this woman. He responded almost sheepishly, "I wish she were as easily convinced."
Telarath's eyes gleamed as she smiled. "If anyone can convince her, you can."
Chakotay wished that were true. He was also a bit uncomfortable with the personal nature of this conversation. "I hope so." He paused before he changed the subject. "I'm sure you didn't contact me to discuss the Captain and myself..."
The alien laughed. "Oh don't count on it, I'm a notorious busy body. But you are correct. You are negotiating for permission to mine...And I have a mining company. I was hoping to invite you and your *pretty* captain to my villa for dinner and business." She winked at him.
Chakotay thought for a second. "I'd be honored, but I'll have to discuss it with Captain Janeway and our security chief."
"Ah, security. Where would we be without it. I assume yours can be as pigheaded as mine?"
Chakotay nodded. "Most likely. I'll have to get back to you about this..."
"I'd say no hurry, but I'm not the only game in town...I'd like to beat the competition."
The commander nodded. "I understand."
***
Harry looked over his shoulder at the Captain. "Captain?"
"Yes Ensign?"
"Is there a problem...I mean..." He stopped manipulating the controls and turned to face her.
"No problem. I'm just waiting for the analysis of the field."
"Oh." He felt a bit sheepish, normally her presence didn't make him feel nervous--but right now it did. "I've pinpointed the source, some sort of generator. I'm working on recalibrating the scans to penetrate through the field surrounding the building. It's a lab of some kind."
Kathryn took a step closer to get a better look at the console. She watched as Harry's fingers moved deftly to finalize calibration before re-scanning. The read-out that appeared across the little screen gave them much more information than the previous ones, but still not enough.
"Good try, Mr. Kim, keep at it," she smiled and touched his arm. The tension emanating from the Ensign had been a tangible thing. In fact, she thought that he might have been holding his breathe judging from his quick exhalation. She opened her mouth, and would have spoken further but was distracted by the turbolift doors.
Commander Chakotay appeared, once again in the standard uniform and looking...the words 'utterly handsome' worked their way into her mind before she squashed them for the more professional 'competent'. His eyes scanned the bridge and found her.
"Captain, if I may have a word with you?" he requested. 'In private' was clearly evident in his gaze.
She gestured toward her ready room. As she walked the few steps that took her past her First Officer and into the room, her mind flew over the possibilities. Maybe he was demanding an apology for the 'dress' dress uniform on the planet, if so, it wasn't going to happen. She was well within her rights as Captain. Or perhaps, her mind latched unto another idea, he wanted to end this here and now. The more she thought about it, the more she was convinced this had to be it. Thus she settled calmly behind her desk and waited.
Chakotay seemed to frown ever so slightly before coming to attention. A quick wave of her hand, "at ease," dispensed with that bit of formality.
"Captain," Chakotay spoke from parade rest. "I've just received a private communication from Telarath..."
Kathryn's mind went blank for a full second as she struggled to process the information. By the time her mind cleared she caught, "...dinner tonight. I told her that I would have to check with you, and also that there would be matters of security as well as..."
She cut him off. "Commander Chakotay, what you choose to do on your private time is not my concern where it does not interfere with the workings of this ship and its crew." Her voice sounded harsh to her own ears.
Chakotay blinked, obviously startled. "Would you have preferred that I route the call to you first?" he asked. Unless Star Fleet had changed the rules, his private comm messages did not have to go through the Captain. Of course they were compressed and saved by the ships computer as were many other minute pieces of transitional data. Unless someone permanently saved it within 30 hours the record would auto-delete; only a log that the conversation occurred would remain.
Kathryn warred with an odd falling sensation in the pit of her stomach. "No, Commander. That won't be necessary." She stood as if bringing the meeting to a close.
"So shall I let her know that you and I will be coming, then?" Chakotay asked, very confused.
Kathryn stared at him, her mind whirling as it tried to process the fact that he was not asking for permission to meet privately with the Ortoan woman. She scrambled to cover her relief and embarrassment. "Uh, yes. That will be fine Commander. I'm sure it will be an enjoyable evening." she managed to stammer.
Chakotay eyed her with a puzzled expression. "Yes, Telarath is a charming woman. The opportunity to negotiate for dilithium and other minerals she controls should not be wasted. With your permission I'll check with B'Elanna for a list of our most immediate needs."
Kathryn hadn't moved since she had granted permission and Chakotay was beginning to wonder about her. "Captain?"
Janeway blinked shaking the cobwebs from her mind. "Yes, fine Commander."
"Very well, Captain. I'll see to the arrangements. Dinner is to begin at 1700 hours so we should be prepared for transport by 1650."
Janeway nodded. "Dismissed."
Chakotay's exit was a crisp salute and an about face. As the door slid shut behind his marching form Kathryn sighed. The tension she had been holding inside threatened to overwhelm her and she forced herself to sit and relax. The image of her First Officer snapping to attention would not fade from her mind. How long were things going to remain like this? How long was simply being in the same room with Chakotay going to feel like torture? A week ago the same invitation would have been so much more pleasant.
Kathryn closed her eyes as she imagined how the scene could have been played. She pictured Chakotay entering her office with that mischievous grin in his eyes.
"Kathryn what would you say to a quiet dinner on the planet? Just the two of us, no ship and no distractions?"
"That sounds like a wonderful evening."
"It does doesn't it? Too bad we'll have to spend it with the Ortoans."
"Terrible man. What time are we supposed to be there?"
"Pick you up at 1650?"
"Fine."
"Oh, and Kathryn...it's not an official function. Why don't you were your green dress?"
Kathryn snapped her eyes open. "That's enough of that!" she told herself sternly.
***
Telarath nervously waited on the patio of her mansion. Her guests would be here in seconds. She turned and looked at her chief-of-security with a glare. "Keep *them* away. I don't want this dinner to be disturbed by such trivialities."
"Yes maam. He backed off quickly, not wanting to upset her further. Another Aide appeared and whispered in Telarath's ear. She smiled slightly as she nodded, then motioned him away. A few glitches in her plan, but she hadn't become successful by not being prepared for glitches.
She clapped her hands with anticipation, then froze at the appearance of thousands of tiny lights that quickly coalesced into the form of Commander Chakotay and his pretty Captain.
"Good evening, Captain, Commander. Welcome to my home." Telarath linked Chakotay's elbow with hers and stepped into a large spacious room. She didn't give him a chance to worry about protocol or the fact that Janeway was still standing outside, a furious expression on her face.
Janeway followed the twosome into the house, quietly fuming. How dare the woman act so proprietary with *her* first officer. The way she held onto him, one might think she was afraid he might escape! *Stop it Kathryn,* she told herself firmly. Chakotay was a big boy, he could fend for himself. And if he didn't want to, then that was none of her business. And wasn't that the way she wanted it? The conflicting thoughts continued to chase themselves through her mind as she followed the twosome to a large, comfortable room with an open fire.
"...Legs get cold." Kathryn caught the tail end of Telarath's words as she drew more fully into the room. She couldn't see Chakotay's face, but she caught what looked like mischievous humor in Telarath's eyes. Her own gaze was drawn to the Commander's legs, clad once again in the 'dress' uniform. She hadn't ordered it, but he'd followed nonetheless.
"Captain Janeway," Telarath smiled her feral grin. "Can I offer you a refreshment before dinner?" Something about her manner told Kathryn that the woman had seen the direction of her gaze. She squared her shoulders against the flush that threatened.
"Yes, Telarath, that would be lovely," she managed. "You have a beautiful home."
"Thank you, Captain," Telarath said graciously as she crossed to a small bar. "Although I'm sure it's nothing compared to that wonderful ship of yours. I've always been fascinated with the idea of exploring space. But, as you can tell that isn't a high priority here."
"Oh but you've explored the near planets and mined them," Kathryn objected taking the offered glass of yellowish liquid. She balked as she looked more closely at the contents. Small whitish objects peppered the surface of the drink. The Doctor had determined that Ortoan and human physiology were very similar and thus their foodstuffs should not cause any undue harm to any of the crew.
Telarath didn't respond immediately to Janeway's comment, but watched for her reaction to the drink, having already taken a healthy sip of her own. Chakotay, having declined, quietly watched the scene.
Kathryn smiled briefly and lifted the glass toward her lips.
She gasped as the liquid cascaded down her throat. Choking and gasping for breath she set the glass on the table.
"Kathryn!" Chakotay quickly crossed the room and worriedly took her arm in his grasp. He turned a questioning look at Telarath as his captain continued to gasp for breath. "What was in that?" he demanded.
Telarath seemed taken aback, "Only ragep juice. It is quiet common."
Janeway gently squeezed Chakotay's arm to let him know she was alright. With a shakily drawn breath she straightened and managed to speak. "I'm alright, Commander. The drink was just not what I expected." She smiled weakly at him. "Don't be concerned, I'm fine. In fact, it is not an unpleasant drink just more sweet than I anticipated."
Chakotay hovered for just an extra moment his worry evident in his eyes. When Janeway returned her attention to the apologizing Telarath he stepped reluctantly away. *Pay attention, Chakotay.* he warned himself. *Negotiations with an unfamiliar planet, no back up, and this infernal tension between us make you far too distracted. You'll never forgive yourself if something happens to her.* He told himself that it was a professional caution, but in his heart he knew why his heart had jerked to a stop at her coughing.
Kathryn took a second sip, much smaller slip. This time the yellowish liquid left a pleasant feeling. She looked at the glass, then her First Officer who was again chatting with Telarath, apparently oblivious to her presence. She closed her eyes. *Why was she here? It was obvious that Telarath and Chakotay...And less than forty-eight hours ago he'd been kissing her. She'd been kissing...*Stop it, Kathryn," she muttered to herself. She could not think such thoughts. Steeling herself, she stepped forward. "Telarath, we are very interested in negotiating with you," Janeway said as she interrupted the tete-a-tete.
Telarath smiled, showing her large teeth. "Good. Dinner will be in five minutes..." She turned to glare at her Chief-of-Security when he entered the room. "What is it?"
"I'm sorry, Madam, but there is a situation that requires your attention."
"I'll be there." She turned to her guests, "I'm terribly sorry. I do need to find out what this *situation* is. Probably the cook burned the Trulip. Please excuse me."
After the hostess left, Janeway walked toward the still open patio door.
Chakotay watched as his Captain stepped through onto the patio. The filmy curtain fell back, amazingly completely obscuring her from view. He thought for a moment of letting her have a bit of peace away from himself, and the demands of protocol he now represented. But a nagging feeling, ironically, regulation, wouldn't allow it. They were alone on this planet, and she should not be out of his sight.
He stepped quietly closer to the door, and watched her through the curtains. She'd wrapped her arms about herself, almost protectively. Her eyes were closed. He frowned, and stepped out onto the patio.
She visibly started at the sound of his step on the hard rock of the patio.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," he apologized.
"It's alright," she murmured softly, and stepped toward the iron railing. "I shouldn't have let my guard down."
The silence grew as Chakotay fought for a response that wasn't personal. He wanted to ask how she was feeling, whether or not she was cold, or lonely. He wanted to take her in his arms and just hold her until all her demons subsided. He wanted...
Realizing he was staring, he moved toward the rail and followed her gaze to the stars. Their beauty wasn't his focus, however. All he could think of was Kathryn Janeway and how unhappy and alone she had looked. His resolve weakened....
His hand was moving before he realized it. He managed to stop himself just before his hand would have slipped protectively around hers and instead set it deliberately on the railing, at a proper distance from the Captain's.
Kathryn had noticed his abbreviated action and she followed his hand as it settled near hers. She turned and smiled at him. The sorrow and loneliness in her eyes nearly broke Chakotay's heart.
"Ka...Captain..." he floundered for something to say.
"I'm a little cold, Commander. Perhaps we should return to the house." Without waiting for his response she turned and reentered the sitting room.
Chakotay felt like crying himself as he followed her through the curtains. The movement of a dark form caught his eye just as he was stepping past the curtains. Turning he could just make out the outline of a humanoid form skirting the treeline. He could not make out any details, but whoever it was didn't seem to be moving quite right. He turned when he heard Telarath talking with Kathryn.
"Excuse me, Telarath, but I believe there is someone on the grounds outside."
Telarath nodded with familiarity. "Yes, that would be one of my security people. One can never be too careful."
"I see. Do they patrol all the grounds?"
"Yes, of course. Danger can come from any direction, Chakotay."
Something about her answer bothered Chakotay, but he couldn't put his finger on it. He concentrated on the women as they resumed their conversation.
"...nothing to worry about, a minor household disturbance." Telarath was saying.
The security chief entered again and announced that dinner was ready.
"Well, shall we?" offered the hostess.
"By all means." agreed Kathryn.
Chakotay noted a degree of reluctance in her voice, but knew there was no way to ask what was troubling her without acknowledging the tension between them. He reluctantly kept his mouth closed and followed his unhappy Captain into the dining room.
Telarath looked quickly at her Chief-of-Security then brought her attention back to her guests as she settled them at a grand, but intimate sized table. "I hope you like Trulip." She smiled slightly as she nodded at one of her servants. "This is a traditional Ortoan festive meal. There are five courses. The first is Trulip. A baked cheese." A heavenly smell filled the room as another servant entered carrying a covered dish.
Chakotay watched the servant...Ever fiber in his being was telling him that something was wrong. But he had no idea what. He couldn't just order a beam-out on a *hunch,* a suspicion based upon a feeling. He warily looked around the room.
The servant set the dish down with a loud clang, that caused everybody to jump. The servant shrugged and looked embarrassed. From the look Telarath was giving him, he wouldn't be employed much longer.
Chakotay looked over toward Janeway, she smiled at him, but there was something in the way she looked around the room that made him wonder if she was suspicious too.
Telarath was cutting the cheese, and placing it on plate with several crackers and handed it to Janeway. "Enjoy..."
There was a loud clatter from outside, then the room was plunged into darkness.
Chakotay moved frantically in the direction he'd last seen Kathryn. She'd obviously been thinking the same thing; they met in the middle. He grasped her hand and urged her toward a corner of the room. Insanity broke out in the darkness. Running footsteps and the low growl-hiss of some type of animal could be heard. Bits of furniture could be heard toppling to the ground.
Telarath's voice rang out above the din, speaking in rapid Ortoan. Whatever she was saying was untranslatable. Judging by her tone of voice, Chakotay was fairly certain they were better *not* knowing.
Suddenly there was a scream from Telarath's direction, followed by the sound of a body hitting the floor. Dim lights suddenly lit the room.
The dining table was toppled. Many of the once beautiful decorations lay broken and scattered about the room. Both Kathryn and Chakotay gaped that the destruction had taken place so quickly.
A weak moan from the opposite side of the room drew their attention.
"Chakotay..." Telarath called weakly...
The cry was repeated, then there was a loud gasp. Kathryn rushed to her hostess, easily avoiding the mess.
Telarath was lying on the floor a vicious looking cut across her forehead. Kathryn grabbed a napkin and placed it on the cut. "Janeway to Voyager."
No response.
Chakotay knelt down beside her, and tried contacting the ship. Nothing.
"See if anybody else needs help. She'll be all right." Chakotay stood.
"Chakotay," Telarath whispered weakly. "Be careful..."
Janeway looked at her second-in-command and frowned. "And see if anybody knows what is happening."
"Yes, Kathryn...Captain."
Neither noticed Telarath pull an object from her pocket...
Telarath got a better grasp on the small device held snugly in her palm. She was just preparing to activate it when she heard approaching footsteps. The stride was all Chakotay's. She touched an indentation on the object...
Chakotay returned with a grim expression. "I can't find anyone still alive who can tell me what is going on." He stopped and gave Kathryn a frank stare. "You have to get out of here, now."
Kathryn's chin rose a notch or two in consternation. "Commander, I don't think I care for your tone."
Chakotay nearly winced. "I'm sorry, Captain, but regulations clearly state that in such a situation the Captain is to be removed from danger. We have no weapons, no security, and no idea of what is happening." He quickly tapped his comm-badge. "Chakotay to Voyager."
"Go ahead, Commander." replied Harry.
"Mr. Kim, we have a volatile situation here. The Captain is to be beamed aboard immediately."
"Aye, Sir." responded Harry crisply. There was a pause as he attempted to follow orders.
When Kathryn did not disappear in the twinkle of transporter particles Chakotay frowned suspiciously. "Is there a problem, Mr. Kim?"
"Yes Sir. The energy field we detected earlier has returned. However, this time it's signature is altered and the resulting EM-radiation is interfering with the transporters. I'm afraid the Captain can't be brought up."
"Keep working on it Harry. Chakotay out." Chakotay closed the signal and began to pace in frustration.
Telarath had pulled herself into a sitting position, her back against a marble pillar as she closely followed Chakotay's every move. She took great pains to insure that the Captain didn't detect the devise still concealed in her hand. As Chakotay began to speak she prepared to make her move.
"Captain, given the circumstances I must insist that we exercise extreme caution."
"Commander, this has gone far enough! I am quite capable of handling the situation."
Telarath tensed as Chakotay approach Kathryn counting his steps. When her calculations were in order she pressed the button.
Kathryn strode stubbornly in front of her pacing First Officer. "Chakotay are you listening to me?!"
Chakotay's official mask did little to conceal his emotion. "Kathryn, I'm not playing some stupid game here. We are truly in a dangerous situation. You must be protected."
Kathryn was about to respond when Telarath's shot caught her squarely in the back.
"Kathryn!" Chakotay gasped as his Captain stumbled into his arms. Gently he lowered her to the floor, cradling her head in his lap.
Janeway smiled up angelicly at his dark and fearful eyes. "Have I ever told you how sexy you are?" she replied dreamily.
Chakotay's mouth fell open in astonishment. "Kathryn?"
"She'll tell you the truth now." offered Telarath with a smile. "I was aiming for you, but this will work nicely. I just hope the affects of the shot aren't too strong when combined with the aphrodisiac she drank before."
Chakotay gaped at the Ortoan in a mixture of horror and confusion. "What?" Chakotay looked at Telarath, then back at his Captain. He hit his comm-badge hard, trying to ignore Kathryn's fingers slowly unzipping his jacket. "Chakotay to Voyager. Emergency beam-out now. Or get a shuttle down here NOW." She was sliding the jacket off his shoulders. He closed his eyes, he wasn't wearing much underneath.
Neither noticed Telarath slip out of the room.
"Sir, we'll have the shuttle to your position in forty-five minutes," Harry's voice was concerned, but no where near as concerned as Chakotay was.
He pulled his jacket back on. "Kathryn we can't...Not like this. No matter..."
She looked up at him, "No matter what? How much you want me?" Her voice was low and seductive. Her fingers left his jacket, and started removing her jacket. "Wouldn't you like to help." She smiled as he moved to her hands. A smile that turned to a frown as he rezipped her jacket. She backed off and quickly removed her jacket, before he could stop her. She tossed it toward the table.
He watched in fascination, desire, hunger, and horror. "Kathryn, please..."
She smiled as she pulled her tank top over her head.
Chakotay gasped and squeezed his eyes shut. He couldn't let her do this, she'd regret it in the morning. His eyes flew open as he heard the sound of other fastenings being undone. With a quick movement, he grabbed up the table cloth from the floor and wrapped it around her upper body.
Kathryn wriggled in delight beneath the cool covering. "You want to play hard to get?" she cooed, a hand working it's way from beneath the cloth.
"Kathryn," Chakotay struggled to reason with her, as he moved about the room gathering the articles of clothing she'd scattered. "This isn't what you want. Not really."
"Oh, but it is..." Kathryn continued. He had to make an effort to block the sound of her voice. It was making him crazy. But no matter what, he couldn't do this. Not with her...like this.
By the time he'd turned she'd wriggled both her arms from the constraints of the table cloth and was running her hands through his hair.
"Kathryn," he moaned, gently pulling her hands away, while trying to maintain a grasp on her clothing. He nearly lost his resolve when she unexpectantly yanked his face down toward hers. The clothing that he'd fought to hold on to fell at their feet.
"No," he pulled away, feeling as if he were the one who was drugged. He grabbed her arms and pinned them to her sides.
Having seen her effect on him, Kathryn redoubled her efforts. Chakotay was left with no option but to wrap his arms about her to keep her still. Holding her tightly with one arm, he wrapped her jacket around her body as best he could. He managed to work her arms into it as she pouted seductively at him. The tank shirt was just too much for him to manage. He stuffed it into his pocket.
Kathryn still hadn't given up in her attempts to seduce him, but she was becoming noticeably slower. Chakotay eyed her intently to be sure of what he was seeing. That was a mistake. He practically lost himself in her gaze. For a moment, the pseudo-sexuality vanished, and was replaced by Kathryn the woman.
"Chakotay," she whispered his name. "I'm so sorry...I...I've wanted to...I..." The emotion in her eyes was nearly his undoing. He took her fluttering hand in his, to reassure her. Protocol was utterly forgotten. He opened his mouth to speak her name, and she fainted.
It was then that he heard the soft whine of shuttle craft engines.
Chakotay frowned in thought as he heard the shuttle landing. Getting Kathryn completely back in her clothes was out of the question, he would just have to think of something, quick.
When Paris and Kim rushed into the dining room they found Chakotay scooping up the Captain in his arms like a baby. She was wrapped tightly in the tablecloth and the desperate First Officer hoped she would remain either unconscious or cooperative for the transport back to Voyager.
"Let's go" he ordered without waiting for the junior officers to ask what had happened. As the three men headed out the door Telarath emerged from the shadows.
"Chakotay, you don't have to go. My men have the situation well in hand, and..." she added with a pointed look at the still sleeping woman in his arms, "...You were just getting to the good part."
Chakotay frowned. Why had he thought this woman could be his friend? "I'm taking the Captain back to her ship. I am sure she will be contacting you as soon as she is able."
Telarath smiled sadly, "Don't worry, the effects will wear off shortly. Just remember, what you saw was the truth, no games."
Chakotay shot angrily past Harry and Tom who were trying to figure out what the conversation was all about. "Let's go gentlemen." Cradling Kathryn gently he stepped inside the shuttle.
As Tom and Harry took them home Chakotay lay the woman he loved on a bed and rearranged the table cloth to conceal some of her more distracting attributes. He was about to turn around and ask Harry for an E.T.A. when one of Kathryn's small hands snaked it's way around his neck. Since she had caught him off guard she had no trouble pulling his head down to hers and giving him a very deep kiss.
Harry's mouth flew open as he watched the Captain pull her first officer down. He choked on his words several times, before a quick yank on his shoulder turned him around.
"Harry, your jaw is on the floor," Tom whispered as he motioned the ensign to sit down.
"Tom, I don't think she's wearing..." He started to turn around, but again Tom's hand stopped them.
"This was the whole point...Remember...overdoing the protocol..."
They both silenced at the sound of footsteps behind them. "Tom, how long?" Chakotay asked. It had taken an incredible amount of energy and willpower to break the kiss. She was still, he only hoped she remained that way.
"Thirty minutes, sir. What happened?"
Chakotay blushed. "Too much...There was a raid on Telarath's home, then the Captain drank something..."
"Any chance of getting the formula..." Tom asked with a wicked smile.
Chakotay frowned, "It's best no one mention what happened here...Except there was a raid and the captain was taken ill. Understood, gentlemen?" His voice rumbled with deeper meaning.
"Yes, sir." Tom smiled back.
Harry watched his cocky friend then turned toward the back at the sound of a moan. Chakotay hurried back worried that there would be a repeat performance.
"Tom..." They were interrupted by a blinking light.
"Commander," Tom said, "You have an incoming message."
"I'll take it at the aft station," Chakotay called, a sinking feeling settling in the pit of his stomach. Voyager would have contacted him directly. The message must therefore be from an Ortoan, and at the moment he couldn't think of anyone he'd less like to speak with--especially in the presence of one Tom Paris.
He gave Kathryn a quick glance before activating the console--her eyes were still shut, and she hadn't moved from where he'd left her. He settled on the side of the bed, and started the message. The image that greeted him on the tiny screen was a surprise.
"President Glet," he spoke quickly, covering his surprise. "What can I do for you?"
"Commander Chakotay," Glet acknowledged. "Telarath has informed me of the unfortunate mishap at her home. I hope that you and Captain Janeway are well."
Hearing her name must have brought Kathryn to a state of semi-consciousness for she rolled over on the small cot, wrapping an arm around Chakotay's skirted thigh.
Chakotay quelled an urge to look toward her, struggling to don his best poker face. "We were...not injured," he managed as a reply to the polite query. Obviously Telarath hadn't told the *whole* truth.
Glet eyed him curiously, and then went on. "This type of terrorism is not tolerated here. Would it be possible for one of my investigators and I to meet with Captain Janeway to discuss this matter?"
At her name, Kathryn again moved, this time with a soft sigh. One small hand began to trace a lazy pattern. Chakotay was sure he must have gone several shades of pale before flushing a deep red. He desperately hoped Glet wasn't familiar with those particular human mannerisms.
"I...ah, yes, Ambassador Glet," he coughed to cover a choking sound. "If you wish, I'll have Captain Janeway contact you to arrange a meeting <cough>...tomorrow."
"Is everything quite all right, Commander Chakotay?"
"Uhmm, uh, yes. Thank you Glet, but I am fine. I'm afraid the Captain is slightly indisposed though. If you will excuse me?" He cut the communication before the Ortoan could respond.
Turning his head with no little fear he was relieved to find Tom and Harry studiously monitoring their controls. *Thank the spirits for some small favors,* he thought. He jumped visibly as Kathryn began to create a new sensation along his exposed thighs.
A small sigh escaped from Kathryn's lips as they slid their way along the dark muscled legs beneath her. Chakotay's breath caught in his throat as several strands of silky auburn hair tickled his inner thigh.
"Kathryn, please." he whispered desperately.
Harry contemplated shoving his elbow into Tom's ribs--anything to wipe that smirk off the pilot's face. A soft moan silenced any action..."Tom," he whispered. "What is going on?"
Tom almost burst out laughing. "Harry, Harry..." His voice was very quiet. "My guess is..."
Chakotay's strangled voice cut-off the pilot's comments. "Request an emergency beam-out."
"Yes sir." Tom shook his head. "Is that what it is called these days," he whispered to his friend.
This time Harry used his elbow, and was rewarded with a soft oomph.
Tom raised his eyebrows and started to retort, but decided to instead request the beam-out. "Paris to Voyager."
"Voyager here." It was B'Elanna.
A wicked smirk developed on his face as Tom continued speaking. "Hi. The commander has requested an emergency beam-out."
"What happened? Are they alright?"
"Fine...Or rather better than fine." His voice was loaded with innuendo. "Beam them both to her quarters."
Chakotay felt relief wash over him as the tingle of transport settled in. The relief was quickly replaced with horror as he and his rambunctious captain appeared in a darkened room.
Kathryn moaned. "This is much better...."
Chakotay still held her in his arms. She'd managed to weasel one of arms from his grasp and was again rifling it through his hair. "Transporter room. Site to site transport to sickbay." His overriding thought as the transporter tingle began anew was that Tom Paris was going to pay.
~~~~
The Captain and Commander materialized in sickbay. "Doctor?!" Chakotay called in desperation. "Doct...ooo," his second query was cut short as Kathryn slid her free hand inside his skirt.
The Doctor emerged from his office eyeing the tangled command team with all the curiosity his gossip subroutines could generate. "Commander? What seems to be the problem?"
Chakotay gave him a pained look as he wiggled out of Kathryn's reach. "The Captain has ingested an aphrodisiac and she was assaulted by some form of energy which also seems to have...stimulated her." he reported as quickly and as matter-of-factly as he could.
"I see. That would explain a lot." he responded smugly. "Don't just stand there, Commander. Bring her over here."
Chakotay guided Kathryn onto the indicated biobed and prepared to step away from the bed.
Kathryn reached out to him as he stepped away. "Please, Chakotay, stay with me. Don't leave me. Please."
Her voice sounded so insecure that Chakotay was back at her side before he had time to consider a response.
"Shh, Kathryn I'm here. I'll stay." he gently brushed the hair away from her face and took her hand in his.
Kathryn smiled into his eyes and he felt himself loosing control.
Her hand snaked around his neck again, and stared into his dark eyes. "You have wonderful eyes," she whispered...
The Doctor frowned, "Captain..."
"Go away," she snapped. "I'm busy." She pulled his head toward her. Chakotay was almost beyond resisting. She smiled as their lips met--before Chakotay pulled away.
"Kathryn..."
"Captain," the Doctor tried again--this time swiftly injecting her in the neck. As she slumped down on the bio-bed, he looked at Chakotay. "She'll be fine after a few hours sleep...There might be some residual effects when she wakes up..."
"Doctor?" Chakotay asked.
"She may have a nasty headache...And there might be some memory lapses...I won't know until she wakes." The hologram busied himself with studying the scans of the Captain--effectively finishing his conversation with the Commander.
Chakotay carefully stepped back from the bio-bed. "Kathryn..." There wasn't anything he could think of to say. He had to come up with something.
He lifted a hand to touch her small one, but let it fall away. No, he'd leave her be. "Keep me informed," he said in the general direction of the Doctor.
"Er...Commander," the Doctor called. Chakotay turned, and followed the holograms gesture toward the floor at his feet. "You've lost you...uh...undergarment." The expression on the holograms face spoke volumes.
Chakotay felt heat rush over his face as he recognized some of the clothing he hadn't been able to convince his Captain to replace. He stooped quickly to pick-up the offending object--it still smelled of her body.
"Thank you," was all he could manage as he spun quickly toward the doors, nearly stumbling over B'Elanna.
"Chakotay!" she looked up in surprise. There was a wariness in her eyes, but it faded quickly as she noted the commander's face. Her eyes dropped immediately to the piece of clothing he held in one hand.
*Great!* Was all Chakotay could think as B'Elanna's face split into a truly evil grin.
"Chakotay? Has there been a change in uniform that I'm not aware of?" B'Elanna cocked her head and waited expectantly for a reply.
"Very funny, Be." warned Chakotay as he tried to step around the engineer.
B'Elanna deliberately stepped in front of her friend. "I don't recall that particular regulation. Is the game over? Did you win?"
Chakotay shook his head. "No I didn't win. I'm beginning to think that the whole idea was a mistake."
B'Elanna shook her head. "I don't know Chakotay, something seems to have happened down there." She nodded pointedly to the still form on the biobed.
Chakotay shook his head and leaned closer to his conspirator. "Look, B'Elanna," the rest of his comment went unsaid as a noise behind him caught everyone's attention.
"Chakotay" There was no doubt who had called him. Chakotay returned to the biobed to find his Captain fully alert. He turned accusingly on the doctor. "I thought you said she would sleep for hours."
The Doc shrugged. "There must be some reaction between the pollutants in her system and the sedative."
Janeway was struggling to sit up. "Commander Chakotay." she said shakily.
Chakotay stepped hesitantly forward without regard to the curious engineer behind him. "Captain?" He couldn't help but notice a strange look on Janeway's face as she eyed him and the garment in his hand.
Her face turned bright red as she made the connection between her state of undress and the bra in her First Officer's hand. "What's going on?"
"How much do you remember?"
Her eyes opened wide in alarm, "Obviously not the good stuff..." There was a snort from B'Elanna. "I remember..." There was a silence as she thought. "We were at Telarath's...Something happened..." She eyed her the piece of clothing, then her First Officer's reddening features.
"Her residence was attacked--which was probably a blessing...considering..."
"Considering...Oh my..." Chakotay was amazed--she was turning even a brighter shade of red. She grabbed the offending piece of clothing from Chakotay's hand. "Doctor, may I leave?"
The Doctor looked at the bio-scan readings. "Fascinating. If you feel the least bit peculiar, I want you to return."
"Thank-you Doctor." She looked at B'Elanna then Chakotay. "This goes no further..." She shut her eyes. "Warn Tom and Harry to keep their mouths shut."
"Captain," Chakotay said. "Glet wishes to speak with us..."
"Fine...make the arrangements, tomorrow morning would be fine." She motioned for everyone to leave, so she could dress.
"Where are you going, Lieutenant?" Chakotay called after B'Elanna as she moved hurriedly away from sick-bay. She froze to the spot at his words, turning slowly with trepidation.
"I was going to warn--er...tell Tom and Harry..."
"Think you can answer a few questions for me first?"
B'Elanna took a deep breath. "Sure, Commander." The fact he'd emphasized her rank was by no means lost on her.
~~~~
Uniform neatly back in place, except for the tank shirt--which she couldn't find, and wasn't sure she wanted to find at this point--Kathryn slid off the bio bed and headed for the door.
She caught the edge of a curt "Aye, Sir" just as the doors slid shut behind her. Instinct urged her to dash back into the relative safety of sick-bay. But she stood her ground as Chakotay spun to face her.
"Kathryn?" he called quietly.
Kathryn tried to keep her composure amid the swirling confusion she was still experiencing. *Confusion is only the beginning* she told herself, *the real problem is you are so embarrassed you can't think.* She squared her shoulders, "Yes, Chakotay."
Her First Officer stopped unsurely in front of her. He looked as if he were warring with himself over the possibilities of putting his arms around her in comfort and melting into the deck plates. "I, I've taken steps to insure that whatever anyone thought they saw in the shuttle is kept quiet."
Kathryn felt herself blushing deeply. "Thank you Chakotay..." she hesitated, not wanting to say what needed to be said. Forcing herself not to sound too insecure she forged ahead. "I think we are going to need to talk about all of this. Could you meet me later, I don't think we need to put this off too long."
Chakotay's grin was only meant to express a willingness to cooperate, but Kathryn felt her body trembling from its warmth. "I'll be there Kathryn. Why don't you go back to your quarters and try to rest. Contact me when you are ready." Giving her arm a gentle squeeze he turned and re-entered sick bay.
Kathryn watched him until the door slid shut. As she headed to the privacy of her quarters she began to wish that the shuttle had arrived just ten minutes later.
***
"Chakotay," the Captain said a bit hesitantly after they'd rematerialized on the planet's surface.
"Captain." He warily glanced around. After last night's experiences he wasn't sure whom to trust.
"Captain, Commander," Glet said with a smile as he approached. "Thanks for coming so quickly."
Kathryn smiled. "You said it was urgent."
"First I must apologize for the attack last night," the Ortoan President motioned toward the door. "If you would wait in here, my security-chief is going to be a few minutes."
"I'm sorry about last night," she said after the President had left.
"Why?" Chakotay asked as he sat down on the large table.
"Why? Chakotay, I behaved in a most unprofessional manner...And I fell asleep before we could talk about it."
"You did? Good." At least one of us had, he added to himself.
She studied him carefully--sometimes he could mask his feelings as well as she could. Right now for example. "I feel better, except I had sort-of...well...I had..."
The door opened. Kathryn and Chakotay were surprised to see the woman who stepped through the door. She was followed by Glet and a taller Ortoan bearing a large rectangular insignia on his shoulder.
Both Kathryn and Chakotay nodded respectfully as Glet introduced everyone. "Shall we began?"
The meeting began formally, with Mepren, Glet's security chief asking Telarath a series of questions. He then asked similar questions of Kathryn and Chakotay. Obviously Telarath had told a story that saved them both the embarrassment of the previous evening. She even apologized openly for Kathryn's "food allergy" the night before.
When the meeting came to an end, Glet spoke. "I hope that this bit of industrial espionage has not negatively colored your view of our world."
"No, it's quite alright." Kathryn responded. "There was no permanent damage." The last words didn't come out as smoothly as she'd intended, and Telarath looked away rather sheepishly.
"In that case, I'm sure you have business to attend to." Glet looked between Telarath and the Star Fleet couple. "Mepren..." He gestured his security chief out the door.
Telarath eyed Kathryn as the door slid shut trying to gauge the human capacity for anger.
"Telarath, we would still like to iron out the details of our mining agreement." Kathryn stated abruptly.
The Ortoan blinked trying to regain her focus. "I would be most happy to talk with whomever is necessary, Kathryn."
"I'll have Commander Chakotay contact you this afternoon."
"Still Commander, eh?" she asked with a wink. She turned to Chakotay and shrugged. "I tried, maybe yours was the better plan."
Kathryn cocked her head, "Your plan?" she demanded.
Chakotay scrambled to think of something to say as Telarath slipped from the room, her laughter clearly audible.
Kathryn placed her hands on hips and stared at her rather guilty looking first officer. "Your plan???" She had a pretty good idea what his plan was...but right now she was enjoying watching him squirm.
"Captain...We should notify B'Elanna to prepare her teams..." She was still staring at him. "That way we can be prepared once the...Captain, is something wrong?"
She smiled slightly. "No, nothing is wrong--except for being shot at...poisoned...Forced to look at your legs." Fortunately for her, he was in the more traditional uniform today.
He grinned. "And what's wrong with my legs?" He asked with a slightly dangerous undercurrent.
"Does the word 'chicken' mean anything to you?" She asked with a wicked gleam in her eye.
Chakotay gasped, speechless for a moment. "I have it on good authority that I have *great* legs."
Kathryn looked appraising over his long, black clad legs. "Umm hmmm," she murmured and headed for the door. "Who told you that?"
Chakotay ducked his head as he followed, reluctant to answer that particular question. His silence drew a glance from his companion. He gave in to the mischievous look in her eyes. "B'Elanna".
Kathryn stopped dead in her tracks and burst into helpless laughter. Her mirth was contagious...
From a distant balcony Glet followed the proceedings with a satisfied grin. "Well done, daughter," he said to the woman at his right. "Our alien friends seem much more relaxed than when they arrived."
"Thank you, Father," Telarath smiled and kissed the older man on the cheek.
***
Kathryn and Chakotay materialized on the transporter platform; both were grinning broadly. Chakotay began to descend the steps but Janeway stopped him with a word.
"Chakotay, I think we need to talk."
He eyed her questioningly over his shoulder. "Alright." he said with a nod. "When?"
"No time like the present." she said as she stepped past him and led him into the corridor. Both were quiet as they made their way through the ship. Kathryn managed to control her irritation as they passed crewmembers, but Chakotay winced every time someone saluted them. By the time they reached Kathryn's quarters he was ready to beg for forgiveness.
"Want a cup of coffee?" Kathryn asked quietly.
"Sure." Chakotay wasn't sure how this meeting was going to proceed, but if Kathryn was willing to keep it cordial he was certainly game. He took the cup from her hand and then the seat she indicated on the couch.
"Want to tell me just exactly what you thought you were doing?" she asked as she sat down next to him.
Chakotay looked closely at the woman beside him, it was time to come clean. "I was angry, and I let myself loose control. There's no excuse for it and I'm sorry."
"That still doesn't answer the question." she pressed.
Chakotay squirmed mentally. Just how much did he want to tell her? *That's a stupid question, Chakotay.* he scolded , *the whole reason you came up with this crazy scheme was to be able to tell her how you feel.*
He nearly jumped out of his skin when Kathryn reached out to touch his arm. "Chakotay, there is no reason we can't talk about this."
"Yes, there is," he began.
She looked at him, "Chakotay?"
"I'm sorry Captain," he repeated--feeling less and less confidant about telling her. "I'll cancel the protocol drill immediately." He stood, placing the untouched cup on the table. "If you will excuse me, I need to meet with Lieutenant Torres and prepare for the negotiations."
"Not until you tell me..."
"Tell you what? Almost everything I would say, you don't want to hear." He was surprised at how quickly the tension between them returned.
She looked at him and shook her head. "If you say so. But perhaps I should be the best judge of that. You might...Oh never mind. I'll talk to you later." She too stood and walked quickly to her door. "Until this evening--the state dinner."
~~~~
B'Elanna smiled as Chakotay entered her office, then frowned. "Good morning...How is..." She watched his scowl deepen and quickly moved to discussing the negotiations.
***
Kathryn Janeway had dressed casually for the state dinner. Though it had an official title, it was to be an informal affair. The Ortoans were a fairly informal people.
Many of the diplomats had long since abandoned the buffet style tables for the dance floor. She looked across the room to where Tuvok was warding off the advances of a rather insistent Ortoan female. A movement at her arm brought her attention away from her security chief.
"I'm sorry to see that your Chakotay is not here." It was Glet's wife, smelling as though she'd used just a touch too much of an unpleasant fragrance. "I hear that he was not feeling well."
"Yes," Kathryn nodded. She'd received his message shortly before the dinner. Tuvok had gone in his stead. But the Ortoan woman continued on speaking.
"I had my cook make up a batch of our special ilja. It's good for all ills." She shoved a small decorative vessel into her hands. It was then that Kathryn realized from whence the aroma emanated.
"Thank you," she smiled diplomatically at the woman, who was thankfully drawn away by an elderly gentleman. Kathryn decided it was time to say her good nights. She set off to rescue Tuvok.
"Commander Tuvok," she began as she approached the trapped Vulcan. "The events of yesterday still have me somewhat fatigued so, I am turning in for the night. Would it be possible for you to complete the nightly survey of the Bridge?"
The look of relief that almost passed Tuvok's face was more entertaining than the frank irritation of the Ortoan woman. "I would be most happy to perform that duty, Captain." He turned to his companion almost too quickly, "If you will excuse me Madame?"
Kathryn had to practically run to keep up with him. "I am not aware of any nightly Bridge survey, Captain." Tuvok said quietly as they made their way to the turbo lift. "However, at this time I think it is an expedient idea."
Kathryn laughed as the doors slid shut. "You're welcome."
As they waited in silence for the lift to reach its destination Tuvok began to change his expression. He eyed the urn in Kathryn's hand with a mixture of curiosity and revulsion. "Captain, your vessel seems to harbor an offensive odor."
Kathryn started, lost in thought she had almost forgotten her surroundings. "What? Oh, the urn. It's a present for Chakotay...from Dabrel."
"Might I suggest that you deliver it immediately." Tuvok responded and then quickly exited the lift.
Kathryn followed slowly in his wake. She had intended to do just that, but as she neared Chakotay's door she began to have second thoughts. Her pace slowed even more as she warred with herself over the advisability of confronting her First Officer and his 'illness'. Still undecided she stood in front of his door and when it slid open, was completely caught off guard by the dark eyes looking at her.
"Captain." He said from his sitting position on the floor. "Is there a problem?"
"No, no problem..." She stopped as she continued to study him. She tried to control her urge to laugh--but couldn't.
He watched her, a smile playing on his lips as she stood there laughing. "What do you find so funny?" He finally asked.
"Oh...Your pajamas...where did you find so...such..." She tried to say between bursts of laughter.
"My pajamas," he looked down at the brownish-green sleepwear. "They're comfortable..."
"I'm sure they are...They're just..." She was laughing again.
"And tell me Kathryn Janeway," he said in mock anger, "are you an expert in sleepwear?"
She placed the vessel on a counter and turned to look at him. "Yes," she said in an authoritative tone.
He looked at her clothing. "Hmmm..." His nose twitched as he noticed the most peculiar aroma. "What?"
"*That* is something Dabrel sent. It's to help you feel better..." She started laughing again.
He just quirked an eyebrow, food wasn't what he needed or wanted. "Well, what do you suggest I sleep in?"
The room suddenly stilled, and she could hear her heart and breathing rate accelerate as she stepped toward him. "Personally I prefer a bed..." She smiled wickedly at him. "Oh, do you mean wearing. I think you would do better not wearing those..." She knelt down beside him.
Chakotay followed Kathryn's movements with his eyes. He was half afraid moving would spoil her mood. Her very good mood. "I'm open to suggestions...It's this or nothing...."
Kathryn raised a brow that spoke volumes.
Chakotay's eyes widened slightly. He couldn't believe his protocol to-the-letter and then some Captain was doing this. Willingly. It was all he could do not to reach out and just touch her. But this had to be her choice, he held himself still.
"I'm sure I have a few ideas," she was saying, continuing to move closer toward him.
Chakotay felt that surely he would burst if she dragged this out any longer. It was then he felt something warm and wet seeping into his pajama bottoms. The aroma that had accompanied the earthen pot expanded to new heights.
He leapt to his feet in alarm as the pungent liquid continued to spill down his leg. "What the!" he yelped.
Kathryn was giggling uncontrollably. "Ooops, sorry Chakotay." She set the bottle down gently and stared blatantly at his lower body, now covered by clinging wet fabric. "Guess you have to take them off now."
Chakotay stared at his Captain in shock. "Kathryn, what is going on with you? You are not behaving normally."
"I thought you didn't like my normal behavior." she responded as she too stood. "That's why you put the crew up to that ridiculous drill, right?"
He didn't quite know how to respond to everything he was hearing, so Chakotay did the next best thing; stall. "Kathryn, I've got to get out of this mess. I'll be right back."
He quickly undressed in his bathroom, listening to her move about in the other room...He briefly closed his eyes and wondered what was in that smelly concoction.
There was only one way to find out. He contacted the doctor and tersely requested a medical tricorder. He only had to wait several seconds before the device shimmered into view. He quickly scanned the remnants of the liquid. "Nothing," he said hoarsely. He pulled his robe on and tied it.
He stepped out into his darkened bedroom and stopped. "Kathryn?" He whispered in astonishment.
She smiled at him. "Something wrong?" She was lying under the blankets on his bed--her dress hanging over the lone chair.
"I...I..." He quickly sat down on the edge of the bed and ran the tricorder over her.
She reached up and took his hand. "I appreciate your concern--but I'm fine." She sat up and allowed the blanket to slide to her waist.
Chakotay forgot how to breathe. He jumped as the tricorder clattered to the floor, shattering the absolute silence that had descended. His eyes never left Kathryn as he scrambled for the device, falling off the bed in the process.
Kathryn laughed as she leaned over the side of the bed. She'd never seen her first officer quite so undone. Served him right. Her laughter became a seductive grin as she slipped her legs over the side of the bed and joined him on the floor.
Chakotay's gaze locked on her legs as her muscles flexed with motion.
Kathryn leaned to his eye level, running a finger along his jaw and beneath his chin. "Breathe," she whispered, almost purred.
It all came out in a rush. "Kathryn! I...I. This isn't y-you...isn't right..."
"Isn't this what you wanted, Commander?" The eyes that locked with his were not laughing, and try as he might Chakotay couldn't figure out if she were hurting, or baiting him. Something deep inside him wrenched painfully.
His eyes never leaving hers, he wrapped her in a earth-toned blanket. The sight of her was far too distracting for where this conversation was going. "No," he said finally. Kathryn blinked but said nothing as he paced away a few steps and began speaking, softly at first.
"I only ever wanted you to admit the truth, to open yourself to the possibilities. I love you Kathryn Janeway, more than I've ever loved anyone or anything in my life. And that love isn't based on sex, or what looking at your body does to me. It's based on who you are inside, your strength and compassion and...and.." He was working himself up into a frenzy of passionately spoken words.
"Shhh," Kathryn said, a small smile crinkling at the corners of her mouth.
"What?"
"I said hush. For a smart man you can be incredibly dim. I've been trying to make up with you all day, Chakotay. Every time I've brought up the subject you've either changed it or stalled, or," she laughed, "spilled something on yourself. The way I see it you've had this coming. For DAYS now," she emphasized his little experiment in protocol. Chakotay had the grace to blush.
"And you're right," she added when he remained quiet.
"I am?"
"No man...or woman is an island. And if I were on one, I couldn't think of anyone I'd rather be there with than you." She let that sink in.
"I love you, Chakotay. Now get over here and kiss me."
Chakotay's movements were wooden as he crossed the room. He pulled Kathryn gently into his embrace as if he were afraid that this particular drill would end too quickly.
Kathryn remembered her fear that her passion had created for her just days before, but this time she was ready for the emotion. She eagerly molded herself into Chakotay's arms and let her fingers slide slowly through his hair. The kiss she placed on his lips was an acceptance; an acceptance of all that she had been trying to ignore and deny.
Chakotay's insecurity melted quickly as Kathryn continued to invite his attention. As his kisses became more aggressive his hands began to explore the soft skin that he had covered with the blanket.
The euphoria he was feeling was more than Chakotay had imagined and with a wide grin he scooped Kathryn off her feet and into his arms. Carrying Kathryn was not a challenge, but it did make it impossible to respond when his commbadge chirped.
"Paris to Chakotay."
With an evil grin Kathryn tapped the badge on his chest. "Go ahead Tom." she said calmly.
There was a pause, then Tom responded, sounding more than a bit embarrassed. "Uh...Captain...Commander. Ummm. Carry on. Paris out."
Chakotay smiled, his dimples brightening his face as he bent his face down to kiss her again. "The whole ship will know within the hour..."
"Since I'm sure your little exercise had additional help..." She smiled slightly as their lips met again. "I somehow doubt anybody will be surprised..." She reached up and unzipped his jacket. "You are more than a little overdressed Commander."
Tom smiled as he leaned over B'Elanna's shoulder. "Do you still want Chakotay to look at the reports." He started nibbling at her neck.
"I think we can wait until tomorrow for approval...You are distracting me..."
"Good." He continued with his light kisses.
"You are a Pig, Tom Paris..." The rest of the comment was lost on his lips.
"Are you going to eat that?" Chakotay plucked a strawberry from Kathryn's breakfast tray. They sat at his small dining table, a variety of both fresh and replicated fruits sat on a small tray along with breads and coffee.
"I *was*," Kathryn teased as he placed the berry in his mouth.
"It's not too late to share," he murmured suggestively.
Kathryn eyed him, sorely tempted. But they were both due on the planet in less than half an hour. "Rain check," she said softly.
Chakotay accepted that, chewing the berry thoughtfully. "What really made you change your mind?"
Kathryn looked up surprised. Where had that question come from? "What's that?"
"What made you change your mind?" Chakotay repeated. "Was it really the protocol drill?"
Kathryn smiled as realization dawned. "No," she said. "But it helped. It made me realize that it wasn't entirely protocol that was holding me back, that was just a convenient excuse. There was a large portion of fear there, fear of being vulnerable, of trusting someone with my heart, fear of losing...."
Chakotay smiled softly at her admission, but the light that burned in his eyes spoke of deeper emotions. Still, he remained quiet, sensing she had more to say.
"I rely on you in so many ways, Chakotay. I was afraid that if I let go and allowed myself to cross that line and fall in love with you, I'd be lost. But it was too late, I'd already taken that step; my angry warrior already possessed my heart."
"Kathryn," Chakotay whispered, clasping her hand across the table. The contact though wasn't enough. He rounded the table, murmuring words of love until they were muffled by their kisses.
Epilogue
"Are you ready for this?"
Kathryn smiled at the man beside her and gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "As ready as I'll ever be."
It had been a week since she had dropped the barriers surrounding Chakotay and herself. A week in which they had discreetly explored the nature of their new relationship. If the crew suspected anything had changed between the Captain and First Officer they had not let her see. As far as she could tell there had been no real change in her behavior toward Chakotay, or his to her. Tonight would be the first time they had dropped the protocol in front of the crew, and the thought still made Kathryn nervous.
She squared her shoulders. "Alright, lets go in."
Chakotay began to chuckle. "Kathryn, it's Sandrine's, not an execution."
Kathryn blushed. "You're right. Let's just go have fun."
Together they stepped through the holodeck doors, Kathryn held tightly to Chakotay's hand and hoped that the shock wouldn't be to much for the crew.
"Hi Captain, Commander." called Paris as they entered his bar. The young pilot walked over, pool cue in hand. "Care for a game, Captain?"
Kathryn eyed him for any sign of outrage or scandal, but could find nothing but an open smile. "Not now, Tom. I'll play later, though."
"Gotcha." agreed Tom and he returned to his table to choose another victim.
"See, no harm done so far." whispered Chakotay. Kathryn tried to keep her body from responding as his lips brushed her ear, but it was not possible. Fighting the need to run her hands under his shirt she led him to the bar.
"Captain." Neelix greeted her as she sat down next to the Talaxian. "So wonderful to see you out and about. Hello, Commander."
Chakotay smiled, "Hello, Neelix. Good crowd tonight." he observed.
"Yes, I believe we are in for a treat. Ensigns Wildman and Gerron have promised to sing for us again. I'm sure that's why so many of the crew are here." he paused as the doors opened. "Aah, there's Sam. Excuse me please." Neelix hopped off his stool and scurried across to Wildman's side.
"Captain! Commander!"
Kathryn looked up to see Harry and B'Elanna beckoning to them from across the room.
"Care for a seat up front?" called Harry.
Chakotay pulled Kathryn to her feet and led her across the room. Kathryn kept expecting everyone to watch as she dangled from his arm, but no one seemed to pay any attention to their progress. Chakotay guided Kathryn into a seat and then slid his seat next to hers.
"This should be great." Harry began, "Sam has a great voice."
Kathryn nodded as she scanned the room. Chakotay smiled and leaned closer.
"Kathryn, they don't care. Let them enjoy the evening. If you keep staring they will start to get nervous."
Kathryn smiled and sat back in her chair. What was she worried about? This was her family, they wouldn't fall apart over a change in her private life. "Youre right. What time is the show, Harry?"
